Sharing Mozart with the masses in the splendour of Santiago’s neo-Baroque Catedral Metropolitana on a balmy Saturday night gave all of us fortunate Sinfonia Rotterdam musicians a gift to remember. Crowds of locals old and young, rich and poor, poured into the huge church during the pre-concert rehearsal. The audience was mesmerised! Rapture, enthusiastic applause and spontaneous comments after the concert brought the all-important lesson home: classical music is a gift for all to partake of and knows no bounds. A tiny old lady dressed in black reached out to me, repeating “bless you, bless you for this evening of joy.” Another snapshot of Sinfonia Rotterdam’s fantastic Santiago adventure to remind us that performances can change people, music matters!!
